The joint International Global Health Committee of the International Societies for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy (ISSHP) and Obstetric Medicine (ISOM) and was established following the 2014 ISOM/ISSHP meetings in New Orleans, USA. There, it was emphasised that our organisations need a global perspective to address maternal death, near-miss, and chronic disability, the vast majority of which occurs in under-resourced settings.
The ISSHP/ISOM Global Health Committee consists of respective society members from all continents. They bring to the Committee the breadth of medical, general obstetric, and maternal-fetal medicine expertise, as well as strengths in clinical care and research, including discovery science.
Mission Statement
The joint ISSHP/ISOM Global Health Committee will promote best clinical, research, and advocacy practices by relevant stakeholders in under-resourced settings through their existing systems. Our ultimate goal is to build capacity and to improve outcomes for women and their babies wherever they live.
ISOM members can engage with the Global Health Committee by promoting and participating in the Committee’s activities to advance global obstetric medicine. Current activities include a needs assessment survey and the development of focused global obstetric medicine courses. ISOM members will also be critical in developing North-South collaborations to generate interest about global obstetric medicine, especially research and funding.

Laura Magee, United Kingdom
Laura Magee is a general obstetric internist (Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology, Royal College of Canada). She has just joined St. George’s, University of London, UK as Professor of Maternal Medicine following consultant posts at the the Universities of Toronto (1996-2000) and British Columbia, Canada (2000-2015). Laura’s research is focused on pregnancy hypertension, particularly antihypertensive therapy. Her number one collaborator in life and research is Peter von Dadelszen, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, SGUL.
James M. Roberts
James M. Roberts, M.D. is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Epidemiology and in the Clinical and Translational Research Institute at the University of Pittsburgh and an Investigator in the Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI). He is currently
principal investigator the Global Pregnancy Collaboration, a program to facilitate collaborations for the study of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Dr. Roberts received lifetime achievement awards from the Society for Gynecologic (now Reproductive) Investigation (SRI), International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy (ISSHP) the Preeclampsia Foundation and the NICHD intramural branch. and is past president of the Perinatal Research Society, the North American Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy, the Society of Gynecological Investigation and the ISSHP.
Dr. Roberts holds a fellowship ad eundem of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in September of 2000 and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine).
Tabassum Firoz
Tabassum Firoz is an obstetric internist from Vancouver, Canada. She has a Master’s in Global Health Policy and her research focuses on global maternal health. She is a member of the WHO Maternal Morbidity Working Group and the UN Commission for Life Saving Commodities. Her current projects look at the applicability of maternal morbidity and mortality policies in low and middle income countries, measurement of maternal non-communicable diseases, and the use of mHealth and geography in maternal health.
Nageena Mahmood
Nageena Mahmood is an Obstetric Physician from Pakistan, working in Abu Dhabi UAE for the past eighteen years. Her background is Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and she works in a maternity hospital which facilitates 8,000 deliveries per year. Her main interests are Pre eclampsia, Diabetes, Obstetric Cholestasis and Connective Tissue Disorders.
Eleni Z. Tsigas
Eleni Z. Tsigas is the Executive Director of the Preeclampsia Foundation. As a preeclampsia survivor herself, Eleni is a relentless champion for the improvement of patient and provider education and practices, for the catalytic role that patients can have to advance the science and status of maternal-infant health, and for the progress that can be realized by building global partnerships to improve patient outcomes.
Shuchita Mundle
Dr. Shuchita Mundle, is working as Associate Professor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Government Medical College, Nagpur. She has an experience in clinical and social sciences research on abortion, maternal medicine especially hypertensive pregnancy disorders. She is a member of the Technical Advisory Group for PRE-EMPT.
Louise Kenny
Louise is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University College Cork, Ireland and the Director of INFANT (the Irish Centre for Fetal and Neonatal Translational Research), Ireland’s first perinatal research centre. Louise has a career long clinical and research interest in uteroplacental insufficiency. She has pioneered the exploitation of metabolomic technology for patient benefit and has discovered and validated biomarkers for the prediction of pre-eclampsia. She has authored over 200 original articles, reviews and book chapters and has developed the first national guidelines in Ireland for the management of hypertension in pregnancy and severe pre-eclampsia.
Peter von Dadelszen
Peter von Dadelszen is a Senior Clinician Scientist, CFRI. He is Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Consultant in Maternal Fetal Medicine, BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre.
